History of the work phases 

Work on the Samuel De Champlain Bridge spanned across 42 months for an opening in both directions on July 1, 2019.  

Designing the Samuel De Champlain Bridge was a long-term project that started years before the initial groundbreaking. 

 

The project included: 

  • The construction of the new 3.4-kilometre Samuel De Champlain Bridge; 
  • A new 470-metre bridge for L’Île-des-Sœurs; 
  • The widening of Highway 15 between the Atwater interchange and the new bridge; 
  • The improvement of the ramps leading from Highways 132 and 10 on the South Shore to the bridge. 

All roadwork, including the final connections between the existing highways and the new bridge, were completed in the fall of 2019. 

Construction stages of the new Samuel De Champlain Bridge: 

Preparatory phase:

  • Construction of three temporary jetties abutting L’Île-des-Sœurs, the Seaway dike and Brossard: June to November 2015

 

Western and eastern approaches :

  • Prefabrication of certain parts: fall 2015 to spring 2017
  • Maritime excavation: fall 2015 to fall 2016
  • Installation of footings, piles and header joists: winter 2016 to spring 2018 
  • Installation of superstructure and deck: fall 2017 to fall 2018
  • Finishing work: 2019

 

Cable-stayed section of the bridge:

  • Main pylon: fall 2015 to summer 2018
  • Rear span toward the St. Lawrence River: fall 2015 to fall 2018
  • Main span straddling the St. Lawrence Seaway: spring 2017 to fall2018
  • Finishing work: 2019

Stages of highway work:

Highway 15 sector (Montreal)

  • New Île-des-Sœurs bridge: summer 2015 to fall 2018
  • Highway 15 southbound: fall 2015 to fall 2018
  • Highway 15 northbound: 2019
  • Final connections: spring to fall 2019

 

Highway 10 sector (South Shore)

  • Temporary works: fall 2015 to summer 2016
  • Reconfiguration of access to the new Champlain Bridge: summer 2016 to end June 2019
  • Final connections: fall 2018 to fall 2019
