To allow for the expansion of Hwy-15 as part of the New Champlain Bridge Corridor Project, Signature on the Saint Lawrence, the consortium in charge of the construction, is continuing its preparatory work south of Hwy-15 in the Borough of Verdun, as announced in public meetings. Over the next few months, two major activities will take place in this sector along the highway between Atwater and Wellington/Gaétan-Laberge: the relocation of the water mains and the partial demolition of the overpasses.

Partial demolition of overpasses between Atwater and Wellington

Beginning in March, the dismantling of the overpasses on Hwy-15 southbound will begin with the installation of retaining walls, which will be noisy but will take approximately two weeks. Repairs will be done on the LaSalle / d’Argenson overpass at the same time requiring partial closure of that road March 7-11 and a complete closure starting Friday March 11 in the evening until March 14 early in the morning. Traffic will be redirected at Henri-Duhamel toward Wellington Street or Atwater Avenue. Local residents will be able to access the neighborhood.

The initial phase of the partial demolition of the first overpass on Atwater involves sawing, installing a cushion to receive the debris and demolishing the deck and girders. This work will be carried out over one weekend in April, from Friday evening to Monday morning. The noisiest demolition work will be carried out during the day, and the quieter debris collection work will be done at night. For these specific tasks, Atwater will be completely closed for one weekend. The second phase will demolish the rest of the structure, that is, the abutments, and this will take place the weekend after the first phase. More or less the same process will be used for the partial demolitions of the overpasses at LaSalle/Argenson, Gibbons and Wellington. The calendar below provides an overview of the work schedule for each overpass.

In addition to traffic disruptions, the work is likely to generate dust, noise and vibrations. Sprinkling will be used to control the dust, and temporary anti-noise walls will be erected for the noisy work carried out near the homes. For the health and safety of the workers, the work sites will have to be lit even at night.

Vibration monitoring

The various jobs carried out along the edges of Highway 15 are likely to generate vibrations in the ground. Monitoring specifically for these vibrations is currently being arranged. Initially, equipment for measuring the vibrations will be placed around the work sites and frequent verifications will be done to ensure we are staying within the prescribed standards.

If required, work techniques will be adapted to reduce the vibrations. During March, experts from Protec Vision Sécurité Inc. will conduct a preconstruction condition survey of the properties in the target sector (see figure 3) between noon and 6 PM to determine their condition before the work begins.
