Lifting of the last box girders for the new Champlain Bridge: start of the final connection

With the Christmas Holidays coming soon, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, was at the work site of the new Champlain Bridge to mark the start of a major milestone.

In fact, after installing 11 concrete segments on the cable-stayed bridge side and the equivalent of three others on the South Shore side, the last components of the main span were installed in the first weeks of December. This completed the last 12.5 metres of the 3,400-metre-long new Champlain Bridge linking Brossard to Île-des-Sœurs.

Heavy parts were lifted a total of 1,000 times during the project, without any major incidents. This is a source of pride for all the workers, engineers and various persons involved in the construction of the new Champlain Bridge.

With these last hoisting operations, the bridge structure is now essentially completed and the last stages of the final connection have begun:

  • Alignment and bolting of the three corridors
  • Creation of junction splice and bolting

The Minister also took the opportunity to announce the structure’s official name: Samuel-De Champlain Bridge. With a lifespan of 125 years, the bridge will be open to traffic by June 30, 2019 at the latest.
