Onset of the 2016 construction season – Verdun / Le Sud Ouest

The warm weather has finally arrived, and with it, the opening of windows in our homes.  This means that some people may hear noises (the normal sounds associated with any major job site) from the new Champlain Bridge corridor project.

Works underway and planned for the widening of Highway 15

The widening of Highway 15 will involve major works over the next few months, notably between the Atwater interchange and Gaétan Laberge Blvd. (Highway 15 South). Planned changes to Highway 15 include the relocation of a water main between LaSalle Blvd. and Wellington St. and the partial demolition of  the LaSalle Blvd., Gibbons St. and Wellington St. overpasses. Certain works prior to the partial demolition of the overpasses (LaSalle, Gibbons and Wellington) will be carried out in the evening, as carrying out these activities during the day would generate significant traffic congestion on Highway 15.  Dust and noise are to be expected, as the works will involve sawing concrete and using jackhammers.

Noise and air quality monitoring

Our Environment team is present at the job site every day to ensure that we comply with the noise management and air quality standards in force.

Watering of the job site as needed and while the works are underway will make it possible to keep the dust to a minimum. There are currently four air quality monitoring stations in the Verdun and Sud-Ouest boroughs.

As regards noise management, SSL may not exceed over 75 decibels during daytime activities. At night, SSL may not exceed the neighbourhood’s ambient noise level by more than 5 decibels. Exceptionally, some noisier activities prior to the demolition of the LaSalle, Gibbons and Wellington overpasses may be carried out in the evening, given that their performance during the day would generate too much traffic congestion. We must, for all such works, not only receive the approval of the competent authorities but also keep the residents of the affected zones informed, as we are doing with this notice.

Schedule of the works

The majority of our activities are carried out on weekdays, from 7:00 a.m. (with teams arriving at the job site around 6:30 a.m.) to 7:00 p.m. Occasionally, the works will continue over the weekend, during the same hours.  Some works may at times be performed in the evening or at night.  Given that noise criteria are stricter at night, these activities are usually ones that are not overly noisy.

To recap, here are the primary construction activities that will be taking place in your sector over the coming weeks:

  • Relocation of the water main between LaSalle  Blvd. and Wellington St. – Until mid-July 2016 (DAY)
  • Works prior to the partial demolition of the LaSalle overpass (disruptions on LaSalle Blvd.) – May 24 to 27, 2016 (DAY AND NIGHT)
  • Partial demolition of the LaSalle overpass, including the complete closure of the  section of LaSalle Blvd. under the overpass – May 27 to 29, 2016 (DAY)
