The end of the fabrication of the pier caps in Spain: a signature element of the project
Published on 29 June 2018
This is another big step in the construction of the new Champlain Bridge. This time, it is the end of the fabrication of the pier caps. These huge pieces of steel have been made famous by their W shape.
Manufacturing took place from June 2016 to June 2018. In total, 37 pier caps were fabricated by three Spanish companies: Megusa, Tecade and Dizmar. In all, more than 30,000 metric tons of steel have been produced.
The pier caps are installed at the top of the piles. They distribute the load between the superstructure and its deck, and the piles. These massive pieces each weigh approximately 400 tons, measuring 52 meters by 11 meters by 3 meters.
36 pier caps have already been delivered to Montreal and only five remain to be installed.
